GCS combines the three largest national supercomputing centres, the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart, Jülich Supercomputing Centre, and Leibniz Supercomputing Centre, Garching/Munich into Germany’s foremost supercomputing institution.
The High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS, Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum Stuttgart) is a research and service institution affiliated to the University of Stuttgart. It offers services to academic users and industry with a specific (but not exclusive) focus on operating leading-edge HPC systems, teaching and training for HPC programming and simulation, collaborative research with national and international partners in the realm of HPC innovation, collaboration with industry, and providing access to HPC through hww—a public-private partnership with T-Systems and Porsche.
The Jülich Supercomputing Centre, located at the Forschungszentrum Jülich ("Jülich Research Centre") – one of the largest interdisciplinary research centres in Europe – provides high performance computer capacity for scientists at the Research Centre Jülich, at universities and research laboratories in Germany and in Europe, as well as for industrial partners.
The comprehensive suite of services comprises the operation and especially the development of the supercomputers and the technical infrastructure, the data storage, visualisation systems, networks and software, as well as a wealth of user support and training. The scientific peer review for projects using JSC’s HPC technologies and infrastructure is done by the John von Neumann Institute for Computing.
For nearly six decades, the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (Leibniz-Rechenzentrum, LRZ) has been at the forefront of its field as a world-class HPC centre dedicated to providing an optimal IT infrastructure to its clients throughout the scientific community and in a broad spectrum of disciplines–from astrophysics and engineering to life sciences and digital humanities. Located on the research campus in Garching near Munich, the LRZ is a leadership-class HPC and HPDA facility delivering top-tier supercomputing resources and services on the national and European level. Specialists for HPC code portability and scalability support the LRZ’s broad user base and ensure to run operations in the most energy-efficient way. The LRZ is leading the way forward in the field of Future Computing, focusing on emerging technologies like quantum computing and integrating AI on large-scale HPC systems. A robust education program for HPC, machine learning, artificial intelligence and big data complements LRZ’s offerings. In addition to its role as national supercomputing centre, the LRZ is the IT service provider for all Munich universities as well as research organizations throughout Bavaria.
